Over 700 Killed during Massive 7.7 & 6.4 Quakes Rock Myanmar

The death toll from Myanmar’s devastating earthquake has surged to 1000+, with 1,670 people injured, according to the country’s ruling junta on Saturday.

Powerful Quake Triggers Widespread Destruction

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Sagaing in central Myanmar on Friday at 12:50 pm (0650 GMT) at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (six miles). Shortly after, a 6.7-magnitude aftershock and several smaller tremors followed, worsening the damage.

Thousands Killed, More Casualties Expected

The military junta has confirmed at least 1000 deaths, but Min Aung Hlaing warned that the number could rise due to the widespread destruction across the country.

Severe Damage Across Cities

The quake left Mandalay in ruins, with buildings reduced to rubble. The Ava Bridge, a nearly 100-year-old structure spanning the Irrawaddy River, collapsed into the waters below.

Myanmar Requests International Aid

The military regime made a rare appeal for global assistance, with junta chief stating, “any country, any organization” is welcome to provide relief.

India Responds with Urgent Humanitarian Aid

India was among the first to extend help, delivering 15 tonnes of relief materials including ready-to-eat meals, tents, and generator sets to Yangon on Saturday morning.

International support is expected to increase as Myanmar struggles to recover from the devastating quake.
