In the past 24 hours, Delhi has witnessed a sharp rise in swine flu (H1N1) infections, sparking public health concerns. A recent LocalCircles survey found that 54% of households in the national capital reported symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, headache, stomach issues, joint pain, and respiratory problems.

Hospitals Overwhelmed as Flu Cases Surge

Medical facilities are struggling with an influx of patients experiencing flu-like symptoms, which closely resemble COVID-19. Health experts are urging people to take necessary precautions as hospitals report a growing number of cases with persistent fever, severe cough, sore throat, and body aches.

Who is at Higher Risk?

The survey highlights that young children and elderly individuals (above 50) are the most vulnerable. People with pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, COPD, and hypertension are also at a higher risk of severe illness. Hospitals in Delhi-NCR have noted an increase in cases of bronchitis and pneumonia linked to the flu.

Survey Findings: Flu Infections Climbing Rapidly

The survey, conducted among 13,000 residents from Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, asked how many people in each household were experiencing flu-like symptoms.

  • 9% reported that four or more members of their household were affected.
  • 45% said two to three individuals had symptoms.
  • 36% mentioned that no one in their household was currently ill.

Since August 2024, the percentage of affected households has jumped from 38% to 54%, highlighting a significant increase in infections.

How to Stay Safe from Swine Flu (H1N1)?

To reduce the risk of infection, health experts recommend the following preventive measures:

  • Get vaccinated with the annual flu shot, which offers protection against H1N1.
  • Wear a high-quality mask (N95 or higher) in crowded or poorly ventilated areas.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your face, as the virus spreads through contaminated surfaces.
  • Maintain distance from people showing flu-like symptoms.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your respiratory system healthy.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing.
  • Regularly disinfect high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, phone screens, and keyboards.

As swine flu cases continue to rise across Delhi-NCR, medical professionals stress the importance of timely precautions to prevent further spread and reduce the burden on healthcare facilities.
