U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday threatened sweeping new sanctions and tariffs on Russia following its large-scale attacks on Ukraine, despite previously halting U.S. military aid to Kyiv in an effort to push for diplomacy.
However, in later remarks, Trump suggested that negotiating with Russia to end the war was “easier” than working with Ukraine. His warning, posted on Truth Social, came just hours after Russian forces launched a major missile and drone assault on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
“Given that Russia is relentlessly ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield, I am seriously considering imposing large-scale banking sanctions, additional sanctions, and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and a final peace agreement are reached,” Trump stated. “To Russia and Ukraine- get to the table now before it’s too late,” he added.

Zelensky Urges Action as U.S. Talks Approach
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with U.S. officials in Saudi Arabia next week for high-level discussions aimed at securing a diplomatic resolution to the war.
“The message is clear: peace as soon as possible, security as strong as possible,” Zelensky said in his nightly address. He reiterated Ukraine’s readiness for constructive negotiations while once again calling for a halt to airstrikes on vital infrastructure in response to Russia’s latest wave of attacks.
