Filmmaker A R Murugadoss has hinted at the possibility of a sequel to Ghajini, the blockbuster that introduced him to Bollywood audiences through its Hindi adaptation starring Aamir Khan.
Originally a 2005 Tamil hit featuring Suriya, Ghajini gained nationwide fame after its 2008 Hindi remake. Last month, producer Allu Aravind expressed his interest in developing Ghajini 2 with Aamir Khan.
“There is a possibility for Ghajini 2,” Murugadoss told PTI. “We have something in mind and will sit down to discuss it. If everything aligns, we can make it happen. I have a basic idea, though not a full script yet. If it materializes, it will be made in both Tamil and Hindi.”
The original film followed Sanjay, a businessman suffering from anterograde amnesia, as he sought revenge for his fiancée Kalpana’s murder. Asin played Kalpana in both versions of the film.
Murugadoss, known for hits like Thuppakki, Kaththi, and Darbar, believes sequels and prequels bring fresh perspectives to storytelling. “In Hollywood, even if a character dies, they find ways to bring them back. Prequels are always an option too. In Ghajini, we created a fascinating character—a super-rich man with memory loss. There’s a lot we can explore,” he said.

The director is currently gearing up for his upcoming Hindi film Sikandar, starring Salman Khan. He also revealed he once discussed a project with Shah Rukh Khan, which eventually evolved into his upcoming Tamil film Madharasi, featuring Amaran star Sivakarthikeyan.
“During Ghajini, I met Shah Rukh and narrated an idea to him—Madharasi. At the time, I only had the concept. He liked it and said, ‘It’s very nice, we can develop it.’ I texted him a month later, but he didn’t reply. I didn’t want to follow up repeatedly, so I moved on. Maybe we’ll collaborate in the future,” Murugadoss shared.
He later refined the story and approached Sivakarthikeyan, who he believes is a perfect fit for the role. “I developed the script and went to Sivakarthikeyan. He did a fantastic job in Amaran. I previously worked with him in Maan Karate as a producer. He is a great actor, and collaborating with him has been a wonderful experience.”
Meanwhile, Sikandar, set for release on March 30 during Eid, features a star-studded cast, including Rashmika Mandanna, Kajal Aggarwal, Sathyaraj, Sharman Joshi, Prateik Babbar, Anjini Dhawan, and Jatin Sarna. The film is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment.
