Black Armband Protest at Bhopal’s Eidgah Masjid Against Waqf Amendment Bill

Bhopal: Devotees attending Namaz at Eidgah Masjid in Bhopal were seen wearing black armbands in protest against the BJP-led NDA government’s proposed Waqf amendment bill.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) had urged people to wear black armbands as a mark of protest against the bill.

What is the Waqf Amendment Bill?

The proposed bill seeks to bring changes to the management and administration of Waqf properties across the country. Critics argue that the amendments could dilute the autonomy of Waqf boards and allow greater government interference in religious endowments.

Rising Opposition and Public Sentiment

Muslim organizations and scholars have raised concerns over the bill, calling it an attack on religious institutions and minority rights. Devotees at Eidgah Masjid expressed their displeasure, stating that such amendments could weaken Waqf institutions and impact the community’s heritage.

Nationwide Protest Movement

Protests weren’t limited to Bhopal. Reports indicate that black armband demonstrations were held in Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Kolkata, where thousands gathered outside mosques after Friday prayers. The AIMPLB has warned of intensified protests if the government does not reconsider the proposed changes.

Government’s Justification

The BJP-led NDA government maintains that the bill aims to bring transparency and prevent alleged misuse of Waqf properties. Officials argue that reforms are necessary to modernize property management and resolve long-standing disputes.

Political and Legal Reactions

Opposition parties, including the Congress and AIMIM, have criticized the move, calling it an “attempt to control minority religious institutions.” Meanwhile, legal experts suggest that if passed, the bill could face judicial challenges over constitutional rights related to religious freedom.

What’s Next?

With protests gaining momentum, all eyes are on the government’s next move. Will there be amendments to address community concerns, or will this lead to larger nationwide demonstrations?
