A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, shaking neighboring countries, including Thailand and China. The quake has left hundreds injured and many missing, raising fears of further devastation. One pressing question now emerges: Could a tsunami follow this seismic event?
Assessing the Tsunami Risk
Following any major earthquake, experts analyze the likelihood of a tsunami, as these disasters often trigger powerful ocean disturbances. While not all earthquakes generate tsunamis, history shows that most tsunamis originate from seismic activity.
According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), several factors influence whether a tsunami could occur. One critical element is magnitude, and with Myanmar’s earthquake registering at 7.7, “the risk of a tsunami increases significantly.” However, magnitude alone is not the only determining factor.

Another key aspect is depth. Seismic events occurring at depths of 100 kilometers or more are unlikely to cause a tsunami. In this case, the Myanmar earthquake struck at a depth of just 10 kilometers, making it a potential trigger for sea disturbances.
