Pope Francis appeared in public for the first time on Sunday since being discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he had been treated for double pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff, seated in a wheelchair, greeted crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican, marking a hopeful moment after weeks of concern about his health.
The Pope had not been seen in public since March 23, when he briefly greeted well-wishers outside the hospital following a five-week stay—the most serious health episode of his 12-year papacy.

A Challenging Health Battle
Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, after experiencing breathing difficulties. Doctors diagnosed him with double pneumonia, an aggressive infection that affects both lungs. His condition worsened on February 28 when he accidentally inhaled vomit, prompting doctors to briefly consider ending treatment due to the critical nature of his illness.
However, thanks to the intervention and insistence of his personal nurse, Massimiliano Strappetti, the medical team continued with intensive care efforts. Despite the complications, the Pope remained alert and active—working from his desk and participating in Mass in his private chapel throughout the ordeal.
By March 10, doctors confirmed that Pope Francis was no longer in immediate danger. Upon his release on March 23, his care team advised a two-month period of rest and minimal public activity to ensure a complete recovery.
Sunday’s appearance signals a positive step forward for the pontiff, as the Catholic world watches with hope for his continued recovery.
