Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, who also heads the Telangana BJP unit, alleged on Monday that the Congress-led Telangana government hindered celebrations following India’s victory in the ICC Champions Trophy final.
Reddy took to social media platform X to share two videos purportedly showing police officers using batons to disperse crowds celebrating India’s win over New Zealand. He expressed his discontent, stating, “This is how the Congress govt. Telangana is not allowing India’s Champions Trophy 2025 win celebrations. Shameful!”
The videos quickly gained traction online, depicting police reportedly chasing and striking cricket fans in Dilsukhnagar, a bustling area in Hyderabad, on Sunday night after India’s triumph in the final.
The BJP leader’s claims ignited a heated debate in the state, prompting a strong response from Congress Lok Sabha member Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy. He accused Kishan Reddy of disseminating false information regarding police actions in Dilsukhnagar, which were aimed at maintaining law and order. Reddy asserted, “Kishan Reddy spreads false information on police action… and wants to create a wrong impression that the Congress government is not enthusiastic about India winning the Champions Trophy.” He emphasized that celebrations were indeed taking place across the state and criticized Reddy for engaging in “petty politics.”
In response to the allegations, a senior police official from Telangana refuted the claims of a lathi charge, clarifying that the police action was not meant to suppress celebrations but to clear the way for ambulances. The official explained, “They were not only blocking the roads but the movement of two ambulances. To give way to the ambulances, police dispersed them (people gathered on the road).”
India secured a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final, marking another significant achievement in global cricket. Celebrations erupted nationwide, with various politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extending their congratulations to Team India for their success.
