Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced an ambitious ₹3 lakh crore infrastructure investment for Assam, asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has brought peace, development, and employment to the state. Speaking at the inauguration of the newly revamped Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon during his three-day visit to Assam and Mizoram, Shah criticized the Congress for allowing unrest to persist in the state for years.
Spread across 340 acres, the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy is undergoing a ₹1,024 crore refurbishment in two phases. The first phase, valued at ₹167.4 crore, includes a modern five-story building with smart classrooms, a weapons simulator, research labs, administrative offices, a museum, and a state-of-the-art parade ground.
Addressing the gathering, Shah paid tribute to Lachit Barphukan, the legendary Assamese general who defeated the Mughals.
“Lachit Barphukan was a great warrior who drove the Mughals back to Delhi. Today, an Assam Police Academy has been inaugurated in his name, equipped with the latest technology,” he said.
Recalling his own experience, he added, “I first learned about Lachit Barphukan when I was seven years old, but his story was never widely taught. Now, it is part of the curriculum in 23 languages across the country.”

Modi Govt’s Development Push in Assam
Shah emphasized that once the academy’s three phases are completed, with a total expenditure of ₹1,050 crore, it will become the best police academy in the country. He also reflected on his past, recalling how he was jailed in Assam during the Congress regime as a youth activist.
Highlighting the transformation under PM Modi’s government, Shah remarked, “During the Congress rule, Assam was known for insurgency and unrest. But today, under Modi ji’s leadership, peace accords have been signed, over 10,000 youths have given up insurgency, and Assam is on the path of development. Soon, the state will be home to India’s first semiconductor unit.”
He further announced the central government’s ₹3 lakh crore investment in Assam’s infrastructure, promising a massive boost in employment.
“People from across the country will come here for jobs,” Shah declared, adding that under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam has already secured ₹5,000 lakh crore in investments.
Shah Targets Congress Over Assam’s Turbulent Past
Sharpening his attack on the opposition, Shah questioned Congress’ past governance, asking, “Why was Assam allowed to burn in the fire of unrest and insurgency? Why were no efforts made for peace and development?”
He contrasted the present with the past, noting, “Earlier, Assam Police was engaged in fighting insurgency. Today, it is dedicated to public service.”
Concluding his address, Shah expressed gratitude to the people of Assam for their support of the BJP, saying, “Every time we contested elections here, you gave us massive victories.”
