Ahmedabad, January 12, 2026 — In a vibrant celebration of culture, heritage, and international friendship, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz jointly inaugurated the International Kite Festival 2026 at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad today. The event, held against the backdrop of Gujarat’s iconic skyline, brought together thousands of kite enthusiasts from India and across the world.

The International Kite Festival — part of Gujarat’s Uttarayan celebrations — opened on January 12 and will continue through January 14. Organized by the Gujarat Tourism Department, the festival has quickly grown into one of the most anticipated cultural events during the winter season, attracting more than 1,000 kite flyers, including 135 participants from 50 countries, along with national and local fliers showcasing spectacular designs and aerial skills.

Visitors can also explore handicraft stalls, food zones featuring local cuisine, and cultural performances scheduled each evening.

Chancellor Merz’s participation added a unique diplomatic dimension to the festivities. This is his first official visit to India since assuming office, and the kite-flying event with Prime Minister Modi provided a vivid symbol of cultural exchange and collaboration between the two nations.
